The Daddy Complex

How did you two choose your pediatrician? I have had terrible experiences with doctors personally (not listening to me, etc.), but I am so not putting up with that when I am already stressing about my kid. Any tips?

We interviewed a lot of them, did some research, then threw a dart at a board. And that is entirely true except that last part.

Ask your friends and/or co-workers for recommendations and definitely set up a bunch of interviews with different doctors. It’s good to lay everything out on the table when interviewing. Think of the most controversial topic you have a stance on and bring it up. See how they react. Doctors can be douchebags who think they’re smarter than everyone. That’s probably because they are smarter than everyone, but they still work for you. You have final say. Find one who will listen, but also present a good argument for something about which they feel strongly.

While we know the vaccine/autism thing is utter bullshit, we wanted to do a staggered vaccination schedule rather than the standard schedule. One doctor we interviewed said either we do it the standard way or else, no discussion. We just got up and left. It was really awkward because it was kinda early in the interview. I don’t know if I’d even sat down yet.

The guy we eventually chose said he preferred the standard schedule, but listened to our concerns. We discussed options. And while he still ended by saying he suggested the standard schedule, his main concern was that they get the necessary vaccines by a certain age. And they did. Our way.
