Update On My “Bedtime Threat” Routine
As you know, I created a method for keeping my boys in bed at bedtime. For those that don’t know, it’s pretty simple. I pick six random (and inexpensive) toys and place them on the boys’ dresser. Throughout the bedtime routine, I remind them that after I leave the room, if I have to come back in for any reason other than an emergency, one or two of those toys will be thrown or given away. It lets them see the exact consequences for misbehaving. I know, I know. I’m a genius.
I’ve been doing this successfully for about a month. Last night, however, Boone got out of bed twice. I didn’t get mad. I simply walked him back to bed each time. The first time, I gave him a freebie. I said, “I won’t take a toy this time, but next time I will.” When he got up the second time, I put him back to bed and said, “You know this means I have to take a toy, right?”
He said, “Yeah.”
I showed him which toy I chose (a cheap plastic Hot Wheels knock-off) and left the room. He stayed in bed after that. I will admit I expected a bit more protest when I took the toy. I probably got the reaction I did because Boone was wiped out, but I’m going to pretend it was because my method is SO awesome even toddlers are like, “I’m totally down with that.”
