The Daddy Complex

Dear Everyone: Stop Preying On Parental Fears | Neurotic Dad

neuroticdad:

I am getting really fucking tired of the “your child is in danger” marketing paradigm. You see it all the time on commercials for cretinous local news broadcasts: “The surprising danger to your baby that you may not know about. Film at 11.” Now of course it’s a common way to get mouseclicks. A tumblr site called “babygooroo” which is supposed to be about breastfeeding and nutrition has links articles about x-rays being a risk to children (did anyone not know this?) and asthma (a child died! because of asthma!).

I do not wish to keep my child in a locked, padded, allergen-free room until he is 18. Nor do I (like some parents I know) wish to remain in a perpetual state of worry about hidden dangers to my child. I do wish that people would stop preying on parents’ fears under the guise of information and think more carefully about the difference between information and utter bullshit.

I second this so hard, I pulled a hammy.
